The hydrogeochemical dynamics of aluminum (Al), iron (Fe), and base cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Na+) at East Bear Brook, Maine were assessed spatially and temporally for a high discharge episode. Bear Brook is a paired watershed study with adjacent catchments, West Bear and East Bear. West Bear has been artificially acidified with bi-monthly additions of (NH4)2SO4 since 1989 as a watershed manipulation experiment (Fernandez et al., 2003). East Bear is the untreated reference. The East Bear catchment is 10.2 ha with post-Wisconsinan soils underlain by granite and quartzite bedrock. In October 2005 stream water was collected simultaneously through the hydrograph at four locations, separated by 400m along the stream. A sample collection protocol was designed and implemented to maximize data quality. Six different samples were collected for (1) anions, base cations, DOC and ANC, (2) total metals, (3) dissolved major and trace metals, (4) organically-bound Al, (5) DIC, and (6) closed cell pH.
