We recorded natural hybridization and limited bidirectional introgression of nuclear markers between the newts Triturus cristatus and Triturus dobrogicus in Slovakia using sixteen species-specific RAPD markers. Hybrid index scores divided individuals into two categories, genetically similar to either one or the other parental species. Specimens with intermediate hybrid index scores were not detected. The hybrid individuals observed in this study were classified as backcross hybrids. The occurrence of genetically well differentiated populations at a distance of ca. 11 km indicates that the hybrid zone between the taxa is narrow. The limited gene flow between the species is caused by their marked ecological differentiation. We presume that hybrid zones between T. cristatus and T. dobrogicus may have formed in all transitional lowland versus hilly regions, such as in the foothills of the Carpathian Mts.
