Mobilita osob a zboží je nezbytnou podmínkou fungování ekonomiky a jejího růstu. Zatímco přeprava zboží propojuje různé úrovně výroby až po konečnou spotřebu, bez osobní dopravy by bylo obtížné dostat se na pracoviště a do škol. V Evropě se doprava podílí na hrubém domácím produktu EU přibližně 5 % a zaměstnává více než 10 milionů občanů. Dopravní systém má tedy zásadní význam pro podniky a globální dodavatelské řetězce, je však také nezbytný pro občany, aby mohli vykonávat soukromé i společenské aktivity. Na druhou stranu vyprodukovalo v roce 2020 celosvětové odvětví dopravy přibližně 7,3 miliardy tun emisí oxidu uhličitého (CO2), a to spalováním fosilních paliv a plynů v motorech vozidel. Toto odvětví je jedním z hlavních zdrojů emisí skleníkových plynů a vytváří přibližně 15 % celosvětových emisí CO2.

Mobility of people and goods is a necessary condition for the functioning of the economy and its growth. While the transport of goods links the different levels of production to final consumption, without passenger transport it would be difficult to get to workplaces and schools. In Europe, transport contributes around 5% of the EU's gross domestic product and employs more than 10 million citizens. The transport system is therefore essential for businesses and global supply chains, but it is also essential for citizens to carry out private and social activities. On the other hand, in 2020, the global transport sector produced approximately 7.3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions through the combustion of fossil fuels and gases in vehicle engines. This sector is one of the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions and accounts for around 15% of global CO2 emissions.
