Konference byla pořádána k výročí 20-ti let přijetí Úmluvy na ochranu lidských práv a důstojnosti lidské bytosti v souvislosti s aplikací biologie a medicíny: Úmluvy o lidských právech a biomedicíně. Ta byla přijata dne 4.4.1997 v Ovideu. Konference se týkala přínosu i úskalí Úmluvy, výkladu některých článků Úmluvy, ale i širšího bioetického a právního kontextu souvisejícího s lidskými právy v biomedicíně.

The conference was held for the 20th anniversary of the The Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Dignity of the Human Being with regard to the Application of Biology and Medicine: The Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine. The Convention was adopted on 4 April 1997 in Ovide. The conference discussed the benefits and pitfalls of the Convention, the interpretation of some articles of the Convention, and the wider bio-ethical and legal context related to human rights in biomedicine.
