Kniha je věnována nejrůznějším podobám historického myšlení významného českého historika Josefa Války (1929-2017). V hledáčku jeho zájmu stály hospodářské dějiny 16.–18. století, kultura a společnost raného novověku, středověké dějiny Moravy, husitství dlouhého 15. století, dějiny umění, intelektuální a náboženské dějiny a dějiny dějepisectví. Osm kapitol se věnuje Válkovu bádání o předbělohorském velkostatku v kontextu marxistické historiografie, jeho působení na Masarykově univerzitě od 50. do 80. let 20. století, jeho přínosu k bádání o Františku Palackém a historiografii 19. století, jeho působení v brněnském kulturním životě 60. let a spolupráci s časopisem Host do domu, jeho metodologicky inovativnímu přínosu k bádání o Komenském, manýrismu a kulturních dějinách raného novověku a jeho působení na poli popularizace českých dějin v Českém rozhlase v 90. letech 20. století.

The book is devoted to the various forms of historical thinking of an important Czech historian Josef Válka (1929-2017). The various foci of his interest ranged from the economic history of the 16th to 18th centuries, the culture and society of the early modern period, the medieval history of Moravia, the Hussites of the long 15th century, to art history, intellectual and religious history, and the history of historiography. Eight chapters focus on Válka’s research on the pre-White-Mountain (i.e., pre-1620) economic policy of large estates in the context of Marxist historiography, his career at the Masaryk University in Brno in the turbulent years from the 1950s until the 1980s, his contribution to research on František Palacký and the nineteenth-century historiography, his activities within the Brno cultural life in the 1960s and his cooperation with the journal “Host do domu”, his innovative methodological contribution to Comenius studies, debates on Mannerism and early modern cultural history, and finally his popularisation of Czech history in the Czech Radio broadcast in the 1990s.
