The thesis focuses on a development and subsequent application of a new NMR-based method for analysis of water-soluble organic compounds from atmospheric aerosol particulate matter. Compared to the original plan, the work was extended to include a study of effects of ultrafine and fine aerosol particles on human health. The first part of the thesis describes the development of the method. The analysis is feasible because of an employment of a specialized refining software, Chenomx NMR Suite. Owing to its database of H NMR spectra, Chenomx allows identification of dozens of compounds in a single spectrum of a mixture by a comparison of precise chemical shifts of the signals in the H NMR spectrum with the signals in the library of reference spectra. Moreover, the database of reference spectra was expanded by spectra of 48 additional compounds that are known to be present in the water¬soluble organic fraction of atmospheric aerosols. With this extension, the final Aerosol Database consists of ca. 150 compounds.
