The Introduction investigates various meanings of the term ‘modernity’ and problems linked to definition of this concept. In this context, it deals with Hegel’s ideas pertaining to various phenomena related to modernity, especially the new form of self and a novel form of society. It turns out that Hegel aimed at a synthesis of a classical (Greek) conception of ethical life with a modern notion of freedom. The Introduction also includes the conceptual structure of the book and a brief overview of individual chapters.
