The notion of *gněv“ ‘anger, rage, wrath’ and its equivalents in the individual Slavic languages is central to the expression of negative emotions in Slavic. In our paper we aim to give a functional-semantic analysis of predicates with the roots -gnev- (Russian), -hněv- (Czech), -hněw- (Upper Sorbian), and -gniw- (Lower Sorbian). In doing so, we concentrate on semantic, functional, and word-formation parameters and follow the frequency and collocations of the lexical items with these roots. As a beginning of such a complex description, we mainly confront the usage of these roots in several Bible translations as well as their usage in other texts.
