An air synthetic jet actuator with a rectangular nozzle exit and an oscillating lip was designed. The time-mean extrusion velocity was evaluated by means of two independent methods: the thrust measurement using a precision scale yields 3.0 m/s and the hot-wire anemometer yields a reasonably close value of 3.4 m/s. The maximum extrusion velocity at the nozzle exit was measured as 13.1 m/s. The results indicate that the proposed actuator could be a promising alternative for many potential applications (active flow control, thrusters, and convective heat/mass transfer including cooling of electronics).
