Ačkoliv většina obnovitelných zdrojů čerpá ze Slunce energii uvolněnou při jaderné fúzi, samotná jaderná fúze není považována za obnovitelný zdroj. Pokud ale sumarizujeme požadavky kladené na obnovitelné zdroje, zjistíme, že fúzní palivo všechny tyto požadavky splňuje. Jde proto jen o administrativní rozhodnutí, zda bude fúzní palivo mezi obnovitelné zdroje zařazeno

Although most renewable sources of energy draw their energy directly or indirectly from the fusion of the atomic nuclei in the Sun, the fusion energy source is not considered to be the renewable source of energy. This article summarizes the requirements of the renewable source definitions and demonstrates that the fusion fuel, deuterium and lithium, has all of the characteristics of a renewable source. Accepting fusion fuel as a renewable source of energy may enable faster development of the necessary technologies for using it.
