Heparan sulfate mimicking regeneration agent (RGTA) enabled the healing of the rabbit cornea, injured with highly concentrated alkali. When RGTA was applied by dropping on the damaged cornea early after the injury, it highly suppresed the development of corneal ulcerative processes. When the damaged cornea was topically treated with RGTA later after the injury – during the occurence of corneal ulcers, it healed majority of them. The healing of the alkali-injured cornea by RGTA took place due to the reduction of proteolytic, oxidative and nitrosative damage. key words (3): RGTA, alkali injury, corneal healing
