Osídlení střední Evropy sahá do vzdálené minulosti, do období spodního pleistocénu, tedy na přelom třetihor a čtvrtohor přibližně před 2 mil. lety. Střední paleolit v Čechách dělíme do dvou fází.
The settlement of Central Europe stretches into the distant past, to the period of the Lower Pleistocene, i.e. at the turn of the Tertiary and Quaternary approx. 2 mil. years ago. In absolute chronology, the Lower Palaeolithic period lasts from ca. 0,75 mil. years B.P. to ca. 0,3 mil. years B.P. The most important locality for the earlier phase of the Lower Palaeolithic period both in our country and Central Europe is Přezletice, with a sequence of five archaeological horizons, a residential feature, a fire pit and human activity zones. We divide the Middle Palaeolithic period in Bohemia into two phases. The earlier phase is preserved very well on plenty of localities. The later phase is not as well documented, which indicates a certain peripheralisation of inner Bohemia that peaks in the subsequent Upper Palaeolithic period.
