The work focused on biofilters based on solid-state culture of Irpex lacteus growing on reticulated polyether foam or pinewood and studied degradation capacity under defined bacterial stress. 1-week-old cultures of I. lacteus were exposed to 109 CFU Escherichia coli per ml for 3 weeks and their growth, capacity to decolorize RBBR dye and enzyme synthesis were measured. Fungal growth was not affected by the bacterium. MnP was the main enzyme present irrespective of culture conditions. Colonization of solid substrates by the fungus was visualized by scanning electron microscopy. No effects of bacterial stress on morphology of fungal biofilms were observed. Immobilized cultures of I. lacteus were further tested in a laboratory scale Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) for repeated and long-term decolorizations of RBBR and RO16 dyes under sterile conditions. Both dyes were effectively decolorized in the reactor with the Filtren TM discs under batch conditions
