Ve studii je vymezena a charakterizována skupina výrobních oborů (např. uhlířství, dehtářství, draslářství), které jsou souhrnně označeny jako lesní řemesla. Ta jsou teoreticky pojednána jako zvláštní raněnovověká exploatační a subsistenční strategie, která v epoše tzv. tradiční kultury sehrávala v lokálních a regionálních kontextech mimořádně podstatnou úlohu. Spolu se zemědělstvím, lovem a sběrem provozovaným v lesích patří lesní řemesla k tradičnímu systému využívání přírodních zdrojů. Lesním řemeslům lze připsat několik základních charakteristik. Za prvé je to takřka absolutní vázanost na les, a to jak surovinová, tak prostorová. Druhou charakteristiku lesních řemesel můžeme označit jako technologickou (užívání chemických postupů dekompozice dřeva při výrobě) a konečně třetí z hlavních znaků lesních řemesel se vztahuje k samotným řemeslníkům, kteří mohli vytvářet specifické sociální a ekonomické struktury, podmíněné též náboženskými a jazykovými odlišnostmi.

The paper is delineates and characterizes the groups of crafts and industries (e.g. charcoal making, tar making, potash making) that are altogether called forest crafts. Forest crafts are then conceived as specialized subsistence strategies of the Early Modern Era that played an extraordinarily important role in local and regional contexts. Together with agriculture, hunting and gathering that took place in woods, the forest crafts belong to the traditional systems of the exploitation of natural resources. Forest crafts bear several basic characteristics. At the first place, they are almost absolutely tied to the woods, with respect to materials as well as the workspace. The second basic characteristics is technological (the use of chemical procedures for decomposing wood during production). The third feature is tied to the craftsmen themselves, who could and did form specific social and economic structures, conditioned also by religious and linguistic divergences.
