Publikace, která vychází k retrospektivní výstavě v Západočeské galerii v Plzni, sleduje základní okruhy dosud neznámé tvorby malíře Jana Autengrubera (25. 4. 1887 Pacov – 15. 7. 1920 Praha). V Mnichově se malíř zabýval portréty, malbou aktů, ale také kopírováním obrazů starých mistrů. Z italské metropole pochází pozoruhodná série kreseb stromů zejména z Palatina (1914). V italských krajinách se postupně mění těkavý, chvějivý rukopis barevných fleků krajin z roku 1910 v expresivní, sumární a dynamickou zkratku. Během války se malíř stále intenzivněji zabýval nadčasovými biblickými motivy Ukřižování a Vztyčení kříže, ale i Svatého Šebestiána. Zmíněnými díly radikální expresivně rozervané dynamické formy dosáhl Jan Autengruber vrcholu a bez nadsázky se zařadil po bok tvůrcům, jako byli Lovis Corinth, Max Slevogt, Max Liebermann či Max Beckmann do roku 1910.

The publication was prepared for to the exhibition of Jan Autengruber´s works in West Bohemian Gallery in Pilsen (October-November 2009). It shows generally unknown artwork of the painter Jan Autengruber (25. 4. 1887 Pacov – 15. 7. 1920 Prague). He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he was engaged in paintings portraits, nudes and copying of the old masters. In 1913 he travelled to Italy. From Rome there is a remarkable series of pine drawings at Palatinum (1914). In Italian landscapes (1914-1915) the painter changes his brushwork into an expressive, dynamic sensual gesture. During the First World War he was rapt in biblical motifs like Crucifixion, Raising the Cross or Saint Sebastian. These paintings are the artistic peak of short creative life of Jan Autengruber. They could be compared with paintings of such artists like Lovis Corinth, Max Slevogt, Max Liebermann or Max Beckmann up to 1910.
