Silica microstructure fibers of the "grapefruit" type were prepared and their performances for the development of fiber-optic sensors were tested. For this purpose gaseous mixtures of toluene passed through the fiber holes. The sensitivity of the fibers was modified by the application of thin hydrophobic xerogel layers onto the hole walls. Changes of the output power due to toluene were observed with both the un-modified and modified fibers excited by an inclined collimated beam.
