We discuss recent advances in the understanding of kinetic electron emission (KE) from impact of slow ions on a clean metal surface. Below the "classical threshold" for KE due to direct momentum transfer to the quasi-free metal electrons. We also consider emission of electrons by one-electron decay of plasmons which are excited by slow ions in quasi-free electron metals (e.g., poly- and monocrystalline aluminium).
