Radioprotective effects of respiratory hypoxia on hematopoiesis and possibilities of enhancing these effects by granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor or dextran sulfate were analysed in gamma-irradiated mice. Hypoxia improved the recovery of hematopoiesis and mitigated lethal effects of gamma-rays. Enhancement of proliferative activity in hematopoietic tissues by hematopoietic stimulators increased the radioprotective effects of hypoxia. Adaptation of experimental animals to hypoxic conditions was found to reduce the radioprotective effects without influencing tissue partial oxygen pressure lowered by hypoxia
