The evolution of human thoughts from Greek understanding of fire to a subatomic particle view of the nuclear era is traced in the text, namely in connection to history of the fusion research. The most important discoveries on the way towards a safe and ecological future fusion power plant are mentioned. Current knowledge of thermonuclear fusion mechanisms allows a construction of large scientific facility with parameters close to a power plant level. This project, called ITER, is settled in context of physical expectations and a given political climate.
