The aim of the presented research was to examine the nature of intergroup contact in the border region of the Czech Republic and Austria as perceived by its actual participants. Especially, factors facilitating and complicating potential positive effects of contact were of interest. Czech and Austrian high-school students living in the border area noted down in the form of an open statement their experiences with neighboring nation members. Content analysis of open statements revealed eight recurring factors characterizing intergroup contacts. Experiences with outgroup members were often reported jointly with an evaluation (positive or negative) of the neighboring nation as a whole. Subsequent analysis of the connection between the perceived factors of intergroup contact and the evaluations of the neighboring nation provided insight into the interplay between contact and attitudes towards the outgroup.
