    Poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (CPA-PVP-IBMB) containing carboxyl from 4-cyanopentanoic acid (CPA) and peroxide from 1-isopropyl-3(4)-[1-(tert-butyl peroxy)-1-methylethyl]benzene (IBMB) chain transfer agent was synthesized as a surface-active macroinitiator for tailored functionalization of γ-Fe2O3. CPA-PVP-IBMB initiated polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) yielding CPA-PVP-block-poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (CPA-PVP-block-PHEMA). γ-Fe2O3 obtained by precipitation was modified by CPA-PVP-IBMB and CPA-PVP-block-PHEMA by “grafting-to” using carboxyl groups. “Grafting-from” consisted in polymerization of HEMA initiated from surface of CPA-PVP-IBMB-coated γ-Fe2O3 yielding CPA-PVP-IBMB-coated γ-Fe2O3/PHEMA nanoparticles. Tests with mice leukemia L1210 cells confirmed nontoxicity of CPA-PVP-IBMB-coated γ-Fe2O3/PHEMA. CPA-PVP-IBMB-coated γ-Fe2O3/PHEMA nanoparticles were engulfed by murine macrophages J774.2 and magnetically separated from other cells.
