Život a výroky sedmi mudrců bývají standardně situovány do Řecka archaické doby. V první části knihy se však autor pokouší ukázat, že výroky i legenda vznikly až později, především pod silným vlivem Platóna. Autor nejprve rozebírá různá uspořádání sedmice mudrců a objasňuje logiku volby jednotlivých kandidátů. Dále se pokouší určit účel a dobu vzniku tzv. soutěže v moudrosti, k níž dal podle všeho hlavní impuls básník Kallimachos. Následuje zhodnocení veškerých pramenů, v nichž se dochovaly výroky sedmi mudrcům připisované, výčet jejích nejpravděpodobnějších předloh a výklad motivů jejich zařazení a transformace. Po zhodnocení podobných gnómických sbírek výroků autor mapuje vývoj a typologii řecké morálky od archaické doby až k počátkům hellénismu, načež se snaží objasnit příčiny propojování řecké gnómické tradice se sedmi mudrci, Delfami a Apollónem.

Life and statements of the seven sages are usually situated into Archaic Greece. In the first part of his book, the author attempts to demonstrate that as the statements as well the legend were created later during Classic period, predominantly under the influence of Plato. Different structures of the collegium of the seven sages are analyzed with the aim elucidating a logic of election of candidates. Further the legend dealing of the contest of sages for wisdom is scrutinized: the conclusion is that poet Callimachus provided a decisive impuls to its creation. There follows an evaluation of all sources, in which the statements ascribed to the seven sages occur. After analysing similar gnomic collections the author offers a reconstruction of the evolution and typology of Greek ethics from the Archaic period to the beginnings of Hellenism. The impetus for connecting the seven sages and their statements with Delphi and Apollo is found in Plato's philosophy and theology.
