The state of local (municipal and regional) democracy in the Czech Republic is analyzed as an outcome of a series of reforms that took place in 1990s and 2000s. The institutional expression of subnational democracy on the local and regional level, municipal and regional finance, subnational politics, subnational citizenship and participation, the place of the Czech system within typologies of subnational democracy as well challenges and opportunities it is facing as well as the responses to them are discussed.
