    The aim of the study was to investigate the role of metalloproteinases (MMPs - 1,- 2, -3, -4, -5,- 6,- 7, -8,- 9 and -13) during corneal melting in humans. The markety increased immunostaining for MMPS -1,- 2,- 3, -7, -8 and -9 and increased levels of the activity of MMP-1, -2, -3 and -9 in melted corneas of patiens suffering from various ocular diseases suggest that metalloproteinases play very important role in the destruction of extracellular matrix leading to corneal melting.
