Kapitola představuje rysy souvislé mluvené standardní čínštiny. Navzdory faktu, že čínština je jazyk tónový, přítomnost lexikálních tónů neznemožňuje existenci přízvuku nebo větné intonace. Tóny nepředepisují detailní průběh melodie ve větě – je možno manipulovat s jejich vertikálním rozsahem, s umístěním tónové křivky na hlasovém registru mluvčího a s délkou trvání tónické slabiky (čínština nevyužívá délky samohlásek distinktivně); nic z toho neohrožuje významy slov. Přízvučné slabiky mají prodloužené trvání, nepřízvučné slabiky jsou naopak kráceny (podobně jako v angličtině) a připojují se těsně k sousední přízvučné slabice. Větné intonace se realizují modifikací melodického průběhu posledních slabik výpovědi, aniž jsou narušeny distinktivní tóny. Zásadní důležitost má členění výpovědi na rytmické celky - přízvukové takty. Ignorování těchto rozličných rysů narušuje srozumitelnost mluveného projevu, měla by jim proto při studiu čínštiny být věnována pozornost.

The chapter introduces the features of fluent standard Chinese (Mandarin) speech. In spite of the fact that Chinese is a tone language, the presence of lexical tones does not prevent the existence of stress, sentence intonations etc. The tones do not prescribe the exact pitch curve of the utterance. It is possible to manipulate their vertical span, placement of the tonal curve within the voice register of the speaker and the overall duration of the tonal syllable (Chinese does not use the vowel length distinctively). Stressed syllables are prolonged, while unstressed syllables are shortened (as in English), joining tightly the neiborghing stressed syllable. Sentence intonations are realized through modification of the pitch curve of the last syllables of the utterance, which does not inflict the distinctive tones. The syllables join into larger rhythmical units – stress units. Ignoring of all these features can severely harm the intelligibility of speech.
