Monografie přináší komplexní a syntetický pohled na lužickosrbskou literaturu a na její místo mezi literaturou německou a literaturami slovanskými. Zakládá se na poznatcích lužickosrbské vědecké tradice i na výzkumech německých slavistů zabývajících se touto problematikou sekundárně. Kniha sestává z úvodu, deseti kapitol a exkurzu k problematice dolnolužické literatury. Jednotlivé kapitoly přinášejí problematiku písemnictví obou Lužic v 16.-18. století, osvícenství v Horní Lužici, romantismu v Horní Lužici, poezie obrozené Lužice, osobnost a dílo J. Barta, dále vznik a rozvoj prózy do 1. poloviny 20. století, vrcholné zjevy poezie 1. poloviny 20. století, prózu druhé poloviny 20. století a poezii 2. poloviny 20. století. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována dílu J. Lorence, J. Brězana, J. Kocha, K. Lorence a R. Domašcynové. V závěrečné kapitole jsou zhodnoceny možnosti existence lužickosrbské literatury v dnešním kulturním a jazykovém pluralismu. Kniha je opatřena německým resumé.

The monograph provides a comprehensive view of Sorbian literature and of its place among German literature and the literatures of Slavonic nations. It is based on the findings of the Lusatian scientific tradition as well as on the investigations of German Slavicists. The books consists of an introduction, ten chapters, and an excursion into the problems of Lower Lusatian literature. The individual chapters present the problems of the literatures of either Lusatia in the 16th to 18th centuries, the period of Enlightenment in Upper Lusatia, of Romanticism in Upper Lusatia, the personality and writings of J. Bart, furthermore the origin and development of prose and poetry of the 20th century. Special attention has been paid to the writings of J. Lorenc, J. Brězan, J. Koch, K. Lorenc, and R. Domašcyna. The concluding chapter gives an evaluation of the chances of existence of Sorbian literature in the present-day cultural and language pluralism. The book is provided with a résumé in German.
