Hydrodynamic bearings are frequently used due to their large carrying capacity and favourable damping characteristics. However for the operation at higher revolutions the fluid-induced instabilities known as oil whirl and oil whip can appear. The mathematical model of the rotor system is assembled under the assumption of rigid shaft, massless bearing shells and nonlinear bearing forces determined on the base of short cylindrical bearing theory from Reynolds equation. By proposed feedback controller the movable bearing shells are directly excited by kinematic excitation. On the base of simulations it was found out that the displacement amplitude of shaft with feedback control was always reduced in the whole revolution range and the limit of oil whirl was shifted to the higher revolutions in case of properly chosen control parameters.
