Over 300 sunken houses were (in part or entirely) excavated. Although the soil conditions at the site did not permit the preservation of wooden structures, the evidence on other aspects of house construction, e.g. stone ovens and patterns of post holes in the house interior, is abundant. Recent excavations (2006-2010) also produced an enormous amount of ecofacts and soil samples that are currently being processed. With the use of them, geoarchaeological research makes it possible to model the way the houses were used, abandoned and destroyed, information that impacts our understanding of settlement behaviour at the site. Vybrané keramické nálezy (úlomky nádob a pražnice) z 6.-11. století a nalezená keramická surovina ze 6.-7. století byly hodnoceny pomocí analýz rentgenové fluorescence (XRF), rentgenové difrakce (XRD), optické mikroskopie a termických analýz (STA v režimu DSC-TG), rovněž byly stanoveny základní mikrostrukturní parametry střepových hmot (Archimedova metoda). Byla prokázána souvislost s analyzovaným archeologickým materiálem a nalezenou keramickou surovinou. Hlavními krystalickými fázemi střepových hmot byly především křemen, živce, slídy, u části vzorků byly identifikovány hornblend, kalcit a kaolinit. Description in English This article discusses pottery finds from a well-known poly-cultural location in Roztoky, near Prague. Selected ceramic finds (sherds of vessels and trays for roasting grain) from the 6th-11th centuries and a clay body from the 6th-7th centuries were investigated by means of X-ray fluorescence analyses (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy and thermal analyses (STA in DSC-TG regime), and basic microstructural parameters of the sherds were determined (Archimedes' method). The analyses have confirmed relations between the archaeological material and the excavated clay body. The main crystalline phases of the sherds were quartz, feldspar and mica, in part of the samples also hornblende, calcite and kaolinite. The clay body was used for the assessment of the aging of low-fired pottery by means of hydrothermal load. Firing temperatures of the analyzed sherds ranged between ca 550-850 °C, one exception was a secondary-fired vessel (ca 950-1050 °C). Nově disponujeme plnou škálou ženských ozdob konce 6. a 7. stol. (náušnice, náhrdelníky, přívěsky, spony). Description in English Thanks to settlement finds from Roztoky near Prague and from Kolín on the Elbe, the wearing of a bronze necklace with spirals and two types of circular appliqués, etc. were documented for the first time in Bohemia for the culture with Prague-type pottery (KKPT). Like one type of circular appliqué, the necklace with spirals of Byzantine origin is spread throughout the Carpathian Basin, Transnistria and the Baltics. Thanks to Byzantine imports, the presence of the necklace with spirals in the Carpathian Basin is dated to the early Avar period in the final third of the sixth century and the beginning of the seventh century. Pottery from house no. 1717 in Roztoky corresponds to this dating. As the necklace was found in the last levelling layer of the house, the structure must have been abandoned before or at the end of this period. The dating is also supported by grave no. 2 from Grossprüfening - Regensburg thanks to the coincidence of Merovingian tubular beads. In the case of both Roztoky and Kolín, this fashion probably spread to Bohemia with the expansion of the KKPT, i.e. with the arrival of the Slavs. The bronze appliqué was found above the floor in house no. 1265.1 and was used in the first half of the seventh century (with parallels from the cemetery in Straubing and Čadjavica). The house, which belonged to the second/third phase of Roztoky settlement, was abandoned between the years 640 and 670. With the span of acquired 14C radiocarbon data, this is a more accurate dating for the first (house no. 1717) and second phase of settlement in Roztoky. It is clear that women in Roztoky wore similar ornaments as in the Carpathian Basin and eastern Europe, only their finds are more rare. There is now a full range of female ornaments from the end of the sixth century and the beginning of the seventh century (earrings, necklaces, pendants, brooches) available for study. Praha-západ, střední Čechy) představuje výjimečnou lokalitu a zároveň obtížný interpretační problém. Description in English The Early Medieval settlement at Roztoky (Prague-west district, Central Bohemia) represents an extraordinary case and, at the same time, a difficult challenge in terms of interpretation among sites of the Prague-type Culture (6th-7th century AD). Primarily, the high overall number of settlement features of the given culture is what makes this site unique and puzzling. The overall number of houses can be estimated as being at 700-1000. Finds of the Prague-type Culture were first discovered at Roztoky in the 1980s (Kuna - Profantová et al. 2005). A further extensive excavation took place at the site in 2006-2010 due to road relocation. An integral part of the new excavation was the systematic collection of ecofacts, conducted with the aim of gaining as much information as possible on the nature environment and the basic economic character of the Early Medieval settlement agglomeration. This led to the obtaining and processing of an extensive assemblage of, for example, charcoal fragments, plant macroremains, animal and fish bones, and malacofauna; also conducted was a phosphate analysis of the house floors, a micromorphological analysis of their fill strata and the radiocarbon dating of a series of samples. The results of this work are presented in this article. Workplace Institute of Archaeology (Prague) Contact Lada Šlesingerová, slesingerova@arup.cas.cz, Tel.: 257 014 412 Year of Publishing 2014 - 5.

Description in English The Prague-Korčak culture settlement (6th-7th centuries AD) at Roztoky represents an unresolved archaeological mystery. Particularly difficult to interpret is the extraordinarily large number of settlement features, pit-houses for the most part. The enigmatic nature of the situation is also compounded by the peculiar location of the site on an area of around 20 ha wedged into the narrow base of a deep valley on the left bank of the Vltava River. The article attempts to contribute to the interpretation of this site using various multidisciplinary methods offered by contemporary archaeology, namely soil micromorphology and charcoal analysis.
