This paper aims at demonstrating the principal similarity between the formation of the standardized languages in Middle and Eastern Europe in the time of the classical national movement (19th century) and the processes of creating new dialectal or regional language versions of the free internet encyclopaedia Wikipedia. According to Harald Haarmann, the formation of language corpus, language status and language prestige are distinguished. The use of the language is connected with the function of prestige much more than with the classical communicative purpose. This thesis is illustrated by “useless” translations from the dominating languages to the minority ones as well as by the creation of automatically generated Wikipedia articles. The Wikipedia in a minority or regional language can play a role in establishing a norm by the selection of existing variants. The article also shows the history and the contemporary state of the policy for creating new language versions of Wikipedia.

Sprachliche Strukturen, narrative Strategien.
Balkan Slavic literary production between the mid-16th and mid-19th centuries is characterised by the transition from the medieval tradition to the gradually emerging norms of the later literary languages. This transition manifests itself in two domains: linguistically, as concerns the increasing replacement of Church Slavonic by vernacular elements and structures, while the literary development becomes apparent in the altering inventory of text genres. Arguing that both tendencies go hand in hand, the present paper illustrates how certain linguistic changes can be functionally interpreted against the background of literary innovations. These changes concern the usage of forms and structures that had not been customary in the older tradition, and the appearance of new functions for morphosyntactic categories and syntactic structures. The examples discussed include the functional extension of ‘perfect-like’ forms (l-participle + ‘to be’), the usage of edin ‘one’ as indefiniteness marker, different ways of reporting speech and parenthetical insertions. What these innovations have in common is the introduction of a narrating instance, i.e. a feature that is constitutive of texts with a primarily narrating, instead of descriptive or pedagogic, function. These processes are illustrated from a diachronic point of view on the example of different versions of the Life of Petka Tărnovska, and from a synchronic perspective on the example of selected texts from Pop Punčo’s Sbornik.
The paper "Die sprachliche Landschaft Russlands zwischen dem 8. Jahrhundert und 1116" gives a concise overview of the peoples and languages that Eastern Slavs came into contact with in between the times of their migration eastwards and the heydays of the Kievan Rus'.

Konfessionell bedingte Sprache. Die Situation des Slowakischen im 18. Jahrhundert2020 •
The 18th century marked the beginning of the development and standardization of the Slovakian language whose various dialects had long been treated as part of a common Czecho-Slovakian idiom. Both the Lutheran and the Catholic Church promoted this process of standardization, albeit in very different ways. While the Lutherans used the lingua slavico-bohemica, according to the 16th century Kralice Bible, Catholic intellectuals used the Western Slovakian dialect for their publications. Efforts of scholars, such as Anton Bernolák, helped to introduce (Western) Slovakian as a school subject in the context of the educational reform of the 1770s. At the same time, however, the bureaucratization of the Habsburg Empire thwarted the development of the vernacular languages. In addition to the reforms in the fields of education and administration also print media contributed, albeit discontinuously, to the emergence of a Slovakian language that differed from Czech towards the very end of the century.
