About this book

This work is the first compilation of comprehensive deliberations on botany, cytogenetics and sex determination, genetic resources and diversity, classical breeding, molecular markers and genome sequence resources, and application of omics technology including transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics resources in the multipurpose medicinal plant seabuckthorn. The book also presents a detailed narrative on antioxidative, radioprotective nutraceutical, and medicinal applications of seabuckthorn products. A detailed treatment has been included on analytical techniques and processing technologies. Altogether, the book contains about 300 pages over 17 chapters contributed by globally reputed experts on the relevant field in this important plant species. This book will be useful to the research students, teachers, and scientists in the academia and private sector engaged in horticulture, genetics, breeding, molecular biology, biotechnology, and breeding. The book will also be a useful source for workers involved in the development of plant-based medicines, nutraceuticals, therapeutics, and cosmeceuticals and extension workers involved in the development of rural farmers and small-scale industries.

About the editor

Prof. (Dr.) Prakash Chand Sharma has teaching, research, and administrative experience of over 38 years in different positions at Ch. Charan Singh University, Meerut (1984–2002), and Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi (2002–till date). His research interests are in the area of plant molecular biology, crop biotechnology, and bioinformatics. Mainly, his research group has focused on the development of a variety of molecular markers in different crop plants and the study of microsatellite sequences. His research on seabuckthorn includes assembly of seabuckthorn transcriptome, identification of differentially expressed genes during cold and freeze stress, characterization of genetic and metabolome diversity in Indian seabuckthorn, and development of a novel method for the isolation of microsatellite sequences. Published over 140 research papers in research journals, conference proceedings, and edited books. Supervised 19 Ph.D., 17 M.Phil., and a large number of M.Sc., B.Tech./M.Tech. students. Delivered invited/keynote lectures in national and international conferences in India and abroad and executed many extramural research projects. He has served as Vice-Chancellor (officiating), Dean, Director (Research and Consultancy), and Director (Academic Affairs). Availed prestigious JSPS long-term invitation fellowship at Iwate Biotechnology Research Centre, Japan, and INSA-DFG International Exchange Fellowship and UNESCO Biotechnology Fellowship at Frankfurt University, Germany. Recipient of teaching and research awards, including outstanding scientist award by the Seabuckthorn Association of India. Recently retired as Senior Professor and now serving as distinguished faculty, University School of Biotechnology, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi. He is a Fellow of The National Academy of Sciences, India, and National Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
