Journal Overview
Boreal Environment Research is a truly open access, multi-disciplinary journal devoted to various aspects of the Boreal and Arctic regions and their ecosystems.
The journal offers rapid publication of high quality, original research. From a methodological point of view, manuscripts dealing with atmospheric or ecosystem monitoring and modelling should focus on boreal environments; and may include polar, Arctic and hemi-boreal regions.
Manuscripts dealing with methodological and theoretical concepts, field or laboratory experiments related to the below-mentioned topics are welcome.

This special issue presents research results on land-based climate change mitigation from the Finnish research flagship "Atmosphere and Climate Competence Center" (ACCC). The general aim of the interdisciplinary research flagship is to provide beyond state-of-the-art scientific knowledge on two of the most urgent global grand challenges, climate change and deteriorating air quality, and to co-create knowledge-based solutions to these challenges together with stakeholders. The work is divided into three research programs and this special issue is dedicated to Research Program 1 that is working towards improved estimates and verification of climate impacts of different natural ecosystems and built environments. The studied climate impacts include greenhouse gas balances, albedo effects, aerosol-cloud-climate effects and water cycle effects. It is also studied how climate feedbacks to ecosystems by measuring the ecosystem responses to climate changes and extreme weather events. This work promotes science-based development of carbon farming practices in agriculture and management practices to increase carbon sinks in forests as well as verifies carbon sequestration. The ultimate goal is to simultaneously optimize the value of carbon storage, biodiversity, and yield.
