AnnotationThe aim of this paper is to juxtapose with the history of mathematics the basic principles of structuralism presented by Michael Resnik in his Mathematics as a Science of Patterns. This juxtaposition shows that Resnik’s structuralism has sufficient conceptual resources to offer a plausible interpretation of the historical material, whilst also pointing to some problems within Resnik’s theory.
