Odtud plynula její zásadní gnozeologická a sociální relevance.
Description in EnglishThis monograph looks into the usage of the notion of evidentia (evidence’ in the sense of obviousness, the quality of being manifest) in the texts of Johannes Amos Comenius (1592–1670). It strives to survey the cultural conditions under which, in the early modern age, methods of providing and performing evidence came to be a practice popular with authors and intellectuals. The emergence of the term and its ever more widespread use were hallmarks of a cultural development in which an overall transformation of knowledge intersected with the transformation of textual practices. As the concept was used by Comenius, evidence linked epistemology and textuality. In its consequences though, it exceeded them and embraced social theory as well. The epoch was characterised by worsening frictions between religious denominations, social estates, nationalities as well as philosophical and epistemological dogmas. Claims for power, theories, concepts and interpretations were brought forward and competed with each other. This was the historical context of Comenius’s efforts to use evidence as a unifying principle, a remedy for the lack of consensus in the field of knowledge, moreover, he hoped this concept would be able to establish a general consensus in society. By discovering evidence as a new category Comenius in fact reacted to a changing culture of controversy. As he conceptualised the term, evidence was to become an instrument by means of which certain and uncertain knowledge could be distinguished and controversies eliminated, which permeated society and originated from the fact that reality was not as easy to understand and certain as not to allow for diametrically opposing explanations. In this context the notion of evidentia was an epistemological category, textual practice and auto-referential trope.
