AnnotationThe chapter analyzes the current binary structure of our society which is enhanced by sex- and gender-related conceptualization and regulation on both social and institutional levels. Based on data collection and interviews with trans-persons, it seeks to find an answer to which subject-related practices and processes preserve this binary system as the fundamental social structuring, wondering whether the current equality policies challenge the hierarchic and hegemonic understanding of sex, or whether they are remnants of a sexist approach. This analysis paves the way for a more general and pivotal question – i.e. whether institutions can or should contribute to the process of deconstruction of the gender-related binary system.
