Description in English Border and their exact topographical definition did not belong to the priorities of the Early Modern cartography and also the topographical descriptions of countries and their administrative units operated with notions that meant rather scope than transgress. Yet the importance of borders grew stronger, in terms of both practical (1) and symbolic (2) use, even in the context of Early Modern systematization of knowledge (3). Cartography was one of the factors that reinforced the cognitive significance of the border in the contemporary thought. The study seeks to show how the significance of the border differed in the various types of maps, depending on the various frameworks in which these maps were created, and on the various functions they had: in the maps of the world, continents or countries, or in the so-called forensic cartography.
