AnnotationMolecular and cytogenetic analyses confirmed that Chenopodium album s. str. is an allohexploid originating by hybridization between diploid and tetraploid species. Further we have identified several genetic lineages of C. album s. str. matching lineages of the putative progenitors, indicating its polyphyletic origin. We have also showed that some individuals of C. album s. str. probably evolved very recently. These results indicate that hybridization is very important in the evolutionary history of Chenopodium and in some cases represents ongoing process resulting in wide morphological variability especially in C. album s. str.
