AnnotationThe paper deals with the influence of interactions between humic acid (HA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA, representing algal proteins) on their coagulation by aluminium sulphate. The results of jar tests with BSA/HA mixtures and with single compounds (HA or BSA) were compared. For the BSA/HA mixture, the removal rates were higher and dose of coagulant substantially lower than for coagulation of single HA indicating the positive effect of BSA-HA interactions on coagulation. BSA/HA mixture coagulated even in the absence of coagulant at pH < 4.5. The results showed that increases in organic content in source water due to the release of algae products may not necessarily entail deterioration of the coagulation process and a rise in coagulant demand.
