AnnotationThe study is aimed at the characterisation of algal organic matter (AOM) derived from the green alga Chlamydomonas geitleri, the diatom Fragilaria crotonensis and the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa. Growth of the phytoplankton was monitored by cell counting, optical density measurements and dissolved organic carbon concentration. Extracellular organic matter (EOM) and cellular organic matter (COM) were characterized in terms of the protein content, hydrophobicity and molecular weights. It was ascertained that both EOM and COM were predominantly hydrophilic. COM contained higher protein content than EOM. The character and the molecular weight distribution of EOM/COM were dependent on the species and the growth phase of phytoplankton.
