Climate change is exacerbating the frequency and intensity of such blooms, and as water stress drives internal water recycling within treatment plants, more recently attention has also been given to mitigating the potential for algal accumulation and growth within treatment plants. In this work, strategies to manage algal blooms in both contexts are discussed, including the application of in situ monitoring sensors to give early warning of algal growth, and optimization of treatment processes.
