AnnotationIn the late Middle Ages, biblical manuscripts were often supplemented with non-biblical texts of various kinds and gradually came to be used in place of liturgical aids: they could be used during the Mass liturgy instead of missals and lectionaries and in daily prayer instead of breviaries. And this tendency can be observed in the Czech biblical sources in the case of the Mass lections: while in the 14th century evangeliaries, i.e. full-text sets of pericopes, prevailed, in the 15th century they were completely replaced by mere indexes of pericopes attached to New Testament manuscripts, or accompanied by full-text Old Testament pericopes (especially for forty-day period of the Great Lent). The study focuses on the transformation of the form and function of pericope registers contained in Czech late medieval biblical sources, especially with regard to Hussite liturgical practice, although the question of their use remains rather unanswered.
