Jeho vlivná kniha Kitáb al-milal wa an-nihal (Kniha sekt a škol) byla průkopnickým dílem rozvíjejícím objektivní a filozofický přístup ke studiu náboženství. Je to vlastně encyklopedie téměř všech náboženských a filozofických doktrín rozšířených mezi obyvatelstvem raně středověkého Středního východu a Středomoří. První část tohoto díla, která byla překládána, se věnuje muslimům, jejich směrům, různým duchovním proudům a myšlenkovým školám. Description in English Muhammad al-Shahrastānī (1086–1153) was an influential Persian historian of religions, a historiographer, scholar, philosopher and theologian. His seminal book, Kitāb al–Milal wa al-Nihal (The Book of Sects and Creeds), was a pioneering work in developing an objective and philosophical approach to the study of religions. In fact, it is an encyclopaedia of almost all religions and philosophical doctrines current among the peoples of the Middle East and Mediterranean in the early Middle Ages. Part one of the book, which is the subject of this translation, deals with Muslims, their sects, various spiritual movements and schools of thought.
