One of the possible ways to tune the noble metal WF is the use of Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAMs) of oriented dipoles. SAMs of carboranes with exceptionally high thermal stability represent promising candidates and it was shown that silver work-function can be tuned very precisely over a range of 1 eV. In this work we show the formation of SAMs of carborane-thiols molecules on the smooth gold surfaces of well-defined gold single-crystals using ambient conditions AFM. The detailed comparison of high-resolution topography maps obtained under different deposition conditions will be presented and their physisorption and chemisorption will be discussed.
