AnnotationOverview of the application of thermal plasma for the treatment of various waste substances will be given. The attention will be paid to the application of the thermal plasma torches with water stabilization of the arc, producing a high-enthalpy steam plasma. The research performed in the Institute of Plasma Physics in Prague covers the development of this novel plasma torch and its application for the waste treatment, gasification and pyrolysis. For this application, special reactor was built and large number of experiments with various materials has been performed. Recent experimental results will be described, including gasification and (partial) pyrolysis of lignite, polypropylene and refuse derived fuel (RDF), and reforming and pyrolysis of methane and natural gas. In the near future, the experiments with simulated hospital waste, sewage sludge and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) plastics containing halogenated flame retardants (FRs) are planned.
