Longstanding friendship is being promoted, with the accent on cultural similarities, such as the shared Muslim culture, and calls for mutual respect, represented by non-intervention agreements regarding each other’s affairs. However, behind the rich rhetoric that supports the revival of academic ideas and culture exchange stands a clearly defined set of specific interests in relation to the expansion of trade connections and economic cooperation.
