Charakterizuje funkce a žádoucí formy vlády, jež byly kodifikovány jednak v hinduistické šástrové literatuře, jednak v literární a na ni navazující politické tradici ideálního panovníka inspirované klasickým eposem Rámájana. Description in English The chapter gives a basic oveview of ideas and conceptions of ideal ruler formed in the context of Hindu and Buddhist cultural complexes during their long development from the antiquity to the High Middle Ages. It describes functions and desirable forms of government that were codified in the Hindu shastric literature, in literary and political traditions of ideal monarch inspired by the classical epic of Ramayana, and in the gnomic, niti literary forms - independent couplets and fables that can be seen as specific forms of the “Advice to princes” type of literary creations. In the Buddhist cultural context, the ideas of righteous ruler were based on interpretation of Buddhist canonical texts. Noteworthy is the idea of social contract, where the Buddhist sangha guarantees compliance with higher moral standards, without itself directly participating in executive forms of state power. Political ideas of mediaval Islam are briefly noted in so far as they hold particular relevance for the specific character of Islamicate political structures in the Indian subcontinent.
