First mechanical rockbolts were applied in a metal mine in the United States already in 1927. Un-tensioned fully encapsulated rockbolts were initially used in poor ground in the early seventies. Although the rockbolt support system is the most efficient, it has not been applied extensively in the complex geomechanical conditions of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB). The steel arches support system predominated in USCB, although the steel arches supports are combined broadly with bolting in last decade.
