Důležitá památka středověkého umění byla dosud interpretována především z hlediska císařské reprezentace Karla IV. V příspěvku tuto jednoznačnou interpretaci zpochybňuji a ukazuji souvislost maleb s monastickým prostředím, pro nějž vznikly. Nápadná četnost vyobrazení Eliáše a Elíšy v rámci cyklu patrně souvisí s názorem sv. Jeronýma, který byl patronem kláštera, že právě v těchto prorocích mají být hledáni otcové a příklady mnišského života. Ikonografie maleb zároveň reflektuje i myšlenky řehole sv. Benedikta, jež se odráží ve volbě témat okolo vstupu do kapituly. Ikonografický program Emauzského kláštera je nakonec srovnáván s výzdobou křížových chodeb klášterů v Čechách i v zahraničí. Description in English The chapter is devoted to the questions concerning the iconography of the murals in the cloister of the Emmaus monastery in Prague. The important medieval paintings have been so far interpreted mostly from the point of view of the imperial representation of Charles IV. In the contribution, I challenge this interpretation and show the connection between the paintings and the monastic environment they were created for. The unusual number of the depictions of Elijah and Elisha probably coincides with the opinion of Saint Jerome, who was the patron saint of the monstery, that the prophets should be seen as the forefathers and the models of Christian monasticism. The iconography of the paintings reflects the rule of Saint Benedict as well, which could be demonstrated by the themes depicted in the entrance of the chapter house. Finally, the iconographical program of the cloister is analysed and compared with the decoration of other cloisters in Bohemia and abroad.
