AnnotationErbium (Er3+)-doped ytterbium garnet [(ErxYb1-x)3 Al5O12; x = 0.005, 0.02 and 0.1, YbAG] planar waveguides have been prepared by an aqueous sol–gel method using polyvinylpyrrolidone as a gelling agent. The minimum coating cycles to observe one propagated mode at 1552 nm were determined to be 7. The sol–gel-derived Er:Yb3Al5O12 seems to be a promising material for light amplifiers in the IR region.
