AnnotationWe argue in this letter that description of species only from photo (without preserved vouchers) should not become the norm. Type (original) specimens deposited in a publicly accessible collection are needed to ensure reproducibility in science. Photographs alone should remain the exception, used only when specimens cannot be preserved for technical, legal or conservation reasons.
