It argues that the current science and higher education policy arrangements substantially narrow the understanding of ‘useful’ academic knowledge and either drive researchers to produce expertise in strict alignment with the dominant economic and political powers or push them to pursue purely ‘basic research’. In the second part, the chapter offers a brief introduction to the role of economists in the political and policy transformation in 1990 and two case studies of economists’ engagement in expertise production and the shaping of public policies. The chapter argues that the pressing current issues related to academics’ involvement in policy-making are the diversity of expertise invited into the policy process and the possibilities to embed the production of policy relevant expertise in individual academic careers.
